20 Verses on What the Bible Says About Giving "Thanks"

Scripture on thanksgiving - from the Psalms to the Epistles.

“Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.”
~ 1 Thessalonians 5:18

I first gathered these verses around Thanksgiving, but as I sat with them I was reminded of something the Scriptures make plain: giving thanks is not a holiday. It is a way of life. Paul does not say "give thanks in November." He says "give thanks in all circumstances" (1 Thessalonians 5:18), and he means every tired morning, every ordinary commute, every meal you almost forgot to pause over. Thankfulness is the daily act of telling the truth about God, that He is good, that His steadfast love endures, and that every gift we hold came down from His hand (James 1:17).

But gratitude that stays in our heads has not yet reached our hands. A thankful heart prays, because prayer is how we return our dependence to the One who provides. And a thankful heart serves, because even the smallest offering matters to God: a cup of cold water given in His name (Matthew 10:42), a meal shared with a neighbor, a word of encouragement spoken to someone carrying more than they show. These are not grand gestures. They are the quiet, repeatable fruit of a life that knows it has received far more than it could ever repay.

The twenty passages below trace what the Bible says about giving thanks, from the Psalms of David to the letters of Paul. Read them slowly, and let them do what Scripture always does: reorient your attention away from yourself and toward the Giver behind every gift.
